NutMan FAQ: Missing Soils

Why can't I select my county's soils?

Problem Description: The map units in the client's property don't match any of the map units available in NutMan for the county where the plan is located.

Answer: There are some gaps in the soils data used by NutMan. The NutMan soil definitions were initially established in 1994. There was some missing information then, and there have been updated soil surveys since. We are currently working on the NutMan soils data to bring it up to date. But it's a slow process, one county at a time. For now, if this happens to you, the best work-around is to use a soil with the same slope and soil series as the actual soil in the field, even if the map unit symbol in NutMan is different from the current map. Crop yield and nutrient calculations depend primarily on soil series and to a lesser extent on slope. So matching these parameters will make the balance calculations work out correctly. But be careful. If the texture features of the soil in NutMan don't match the client's actual soil, be sure to check the lime applications yourself. NutMan automatically inserts lime applications into the plan. And soil textures affect the lime calculations.
